CSJL & LAA Honors New SC Justice
LAST FEBRUARY 21, 2009, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and the Letran Alumni Association honored Justice Diosdado Madarang Peralta in a dinner testimonial at the St. Vicente Liem Gardens after a thanksgiving mass celebrated by the Rev, Fr, Rector, Tamerlane R. Lana, O.P. at the school chapel. President Gloria M. Arroyo appointed him last January as the new Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice Peralta was the Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice when the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) included him in a shortlist of five names from whom the President shall choose the replacement of Justice Ruben Reyes who retired last January 3 upon turning 70.
Justice Peralta was a member of the three-man special division of the Sandiganbayan that convicted former President J. Estrada of plunder. He was alleged to be close to the President. His track record in the judiciary and the screening by the JBC somewhat deflected any doubts on his integrity and qualifications.
Seldom does the Letran Alumni Association host a dinner testimonial in honor of its alumni, and the Association and the school cooperated in this undertaking not missing the opportunity to honor a man who had reached the highest court of the land.
The formal affair started with a thanksgiving mass officiated by Dominican Fathers Tamerlane R. Lana, P. De Mesa, and O. Aceron. It was followed by cocktails in the area fronting the San Vicente Liem Garden. The cool and breezy afternoon added to the successful fellowships.
Hector Villacorta whom Justice Peralta referred from time to time as my professor delivered an impromptu toast which roused the school spirit and heightened the evening of Letran camaraderie among some of Letran’s best products |
