LAA Scholarhip Program Continues

A simple act of generosity opened a well of new life for those who has the ability to get quality education but were short in means. Jose A. Aligada of HS 1975 then LAA Director offered to bankroll a scholarship in Letran High School in SY 2007-08. He met and interviewed applicants and finally selected J. M. Faustino who is now 2nd year HS. In the same school year, then LAA President Rosalie M. Cruz, BSC ’79, offered to support a collegiate scholar; the Letran Alumni Foundation, Inc. supported another scholar in HS and the Letran Alumni Association, Inc. mustered enough courage to support two scholars on its own – one of them, Arvin Jay Gaa, is enrolled in Letran-Abucay.

In SY 2008-09, the silver jubilee class of HS 1983 sent Richmond Navarez of Aurora Quezon Elementary School to Letran High School. This scholarship program would not prosper without encouragement from the school. Fr. Boyd, the school Treasurer, offered a 50% tuition fee discount to the program. Last September 25, 2008, Letran and the Letran Alumni Association signed a memorandum of agreement that bind both parties in the implementation of the alumni scholarship program including the 50% tuition fee discount.

To institutionalize the alumni scholarship program, your Association is in the midst of formulating the program’s policies and procedures to guide its implementation. Also the LAA is building up its finances in support of its needs including the scholarship program.

As part of the commitment of your Association and for the sake of transparency, the LAA is putting out the Scholarship Receipts and Disbursements Report for the information of its members and supporters. Since its inception in SY 2007-08, the program cost approximated P541,000 of which P 200,000 was sourced by the Association.
