LAA Pays Courtesy Call on Bishop Socrates Villegas in Balanga
The Letran alumni visited Bataan last May 6, 2007, Sunday. Members of both LAA and LAFI Boards were invited to join and the following were able to make it: Rosalie Cruz, Rody Concepcion, Eugene Sy and family, Fr. Pompeyo de Mesa, Jonathan Gaytano, Jay Llantada and family and John Fondevilla. The group left Manila little past eight and arrived in Balanga at about 11 a.m.
From the St. Joseph Cathedral in Balanga, the group was directed to proceed to Bahay Pari which serves as the Bishop’s residence. The place was a short distance away from the town center. When we entered the residence, the Bishop was there waiting for his fellow Letranites. According to Bishop Soc, Bataan used to be part of the diocese of Pampanga. Now it is a diocese by itself with Bishop Soc Villegas being the third in the line to head it.
LAA Visits and Plant Trees at Letran-Abucay
Fr. Boyd guided the group on the way to Letran-Abucay. It was only a short drive from Balanga along the Roman highway. The new Letran campus was about 5 kms. away from the main road and a big school sign marks the way to the site. The road going to Letran is all cemented and you would notice the gradual ascent. The topography of the Letran-Abucay location is hilly and the campus enjoys moderate elevation.
The 15-hectare campus has an impressive gate and a long-entrance drive leading to the main administrative building. The building is huge and large and houses the different office units, several classrooms and other school facilities. The uneven topography of the land gives 6 levels on one end and 4 levels on the other end of the building. The elevation of the structure gives a wonderful view of the surroundings and the far-distant locations.
The building which serves as the residence of the priests and boarders was at the back of the administrative building. After an ocular tour, Fr. Boyd led the group to the site where the tree-planting would take place. Thereafter, the group drove back to Manila.
